Imposing and castle-like, the Great School of the Nation is the most important Greek Orthodox school in Istanbul. It is known in Turkish as Özel Fener Rum Lisesi and is also sometimes referred to as Phanar Greek Orthodox College (Phanar refers to the neighbourhood in which it is located, or Fener in Turkish). Although the college was founded in 1454, its current neo-Byzantine edifice was only completed in 1883 by the Greek Ottoman architect Dimadis. Since the massive population transfer that occurred between Turkey and Greece in the 1960s, attendance has unfortunately dwindled down and likely many of the classrooms remain empty. It is hard to miss this imposing building when visiting the north-western district of Istanbul along the Golden Horn.
