"Walk on the Town Walls" Medieval Town Wall Tip by magor65
Medieval Town Wall, Rothenburg ob der Tauber: 27 reviews and 74 photos
Whenever I think of medieval towns what immediately comes to my mind are the city walls. The walls provided protection and the sense of belonging for a medieval man.
The walls in Rothenburg were built in two rings: an inner ring which surrounded the Old Town and an outer ring protecting the newer parts of town.
It's possible to walk on the walls for a distance of about 3 km. The walkway, which is about 3 metres above the ground, is covered with a roof. No, the roof is not the modern invention to protect the visitors from the sun or rain. It was there in Middle Ages and was meant to provide protection from the stones thrown by enemies over the wall. It also came useful when the attacker managed to make it up the wall because it stopped him from jumping directly on the walkway.
The walk on the walls is really nice and, which is a great advantage, there are not so many tourists here.
Donations from all over the world helped to reconstruct the walls destroyed in WW II. As you walk along you can see the plaques with the names of donors - some of them come from quite recent times. People say it costs one thousand Euro to have a plaque on the Rothenburg wall. Not cheap, is it?
