les Souks de Beyrouth - Dec 2009
by MM212

With the name "les Souks de Beyrouth", this ultra-modern shopping complex is meant to evoke the memory of the traditional Middle Eastern bazaar of Beirut that it replaced. Once upon a time, this part of town might have looked like Old Sidon or Old Tripoli, with an extensive network of covered narrow alleys that sheltered little shops selling, spices, artisanal products and fresh farmer's produce, and concealed khans and madrassas. Unfortunately, none of this mediaeval fantasy survived the 75-90 civil war for nothing was salvageable, except for the lone domed shrine, Zawiyé ibn Iraq. Instead, Beirut was given a modern structure, which gives a nod to the old souks by preserving the Hellenistic grid plan and street names, but boasts the latest or most luxurious of Western fashion labels, such as Zara, Chloé and Fendi, to name a few. The complex also contains a cinema, restaurants and other entertainment, and plans to dominate commercial activity in Beirut. Some archaeological finds discovered during the construction will also be displayed within the complex. Although les Souks de Beyrouth opened for business in late 2009, their inaugural ceremony did not take place until September 2010 with a concert by the French musician, Jean-Michel Jarre.
