"Visit the Art Galleries, Museums and Gift Shops" San Elizario Things to Do Tip by SEHD

San Elizario Things to Do: 5 reviews and 11 photos

There are 4 Art Galleries, 4 Gift Shops, 8 Artist Studios and 2 Museums in the San Elizario Historic District. Be sure to checkout the Horseshoe Gallery, near the San Elizario Chapel, It houses the "Visitor Center" for the Historic District. A local guide will take you on the Walking Tour of over 17 sites in the 227 acre Historic District. The District is part of the old "Presidio" Fort... that was the stronghold of this Historic town. Dating back to 1598 and the arrival of Don Juan de Oñate to what is now America. The tour is only a few dollars, but well worth the it. There is a self guided tour, but you miss so much. Especially the "Billy the Kid" story about his vist to this old Texas town. You also get to see the actual Jail and cells.

The Main Street Gallery is simply a beautiful preserved building (also part of the Fort). The Artwork was amazing. The Gallery includes an exhibit that chages monthly. Free.

There was no charge to enter any of the buildings. Plenty of bathrooms, too.

No restaurants within walking distance, but there were two under construction. Water is sold throughout the district, to quench your thirst. Your in Texas afterall.
