Vienna State Opera is located on the Ringstrasse in the first district in the heart of the city of Vienna. It is in fact the first building on the Ringstrasse where most foreign tourists begin their walking tour in the heart of Vienna. The State Opera House was constructed in 1869. It was designed by August von Siccardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll in Renaissance style of architecture. However both these men did not live to see the official opening of the State Opera in 1869.

The Opera House was completely destroyed in the second World War in 1945 from a bomb attack and was reconstructed in 1955. It is one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Vienna State Opera is famous for its Vienna Philharmonic whose members are recruited from the Opera House. Vienna State Opera has its own Christmas and New Year's concerts. However the famous annual New Year's concerts that broadcast live to many parts of the world are held at Musikverein located at Dumbastrasse not far from Vienna State Opera House.
