It is true that many of the shops along the quai and around the Place de la Mairie - the main square - are geared to visitors and "milk" the Gauguin connection.

Personally I do not have too much of a problem with that.
Souvenir biscuits, whether Highland Shortbread from Scotland, Yorkshire Cookies or Breton Galettes are usully very nice to eat and make very acceptable presents for people back home - specially the kind neighbour who water the indoor plants and the garden for you and would be embarrassed to receive a more lavish souvenir.

So you will find plenty of specialist biscuit - and chocolate - confectinary here.
The abundant grain that was processed in the 15 mills of Pont Aven gave rise to a particular kind of biscuit/cookie that used locally milled flour and the lovely Breton, salty butter.

In nearby towns - like Quimper - excellent ceramics were produced.
You will find all those things here.

But, just away from the touristic centre of the town, you will find plenty of "ordinary" shopping opportunities - butchers, bakers and grocers and an Ecomarche supermarket.

Lots of clothes shops and a very good, upmarket home wares shop

and if you want to spend real money on local Breton souvenirs a branch of the famous Quimper Henriot ceramics is here in town.
