First, Portlanders led the nation in the forefront of microbreweries and now locals have taken on the task of handcrafted small-batch spirits. Presently, there are eight different companies producing a wide range of products here in Portland. Of those companies, seven of them are located within a close distance of each other within the Eastbank area where you find light industry and warehouses - you can also find Roots Brewery and the Lucky Labrador Brewery, as well. The distillers have taken to calling their area “Distillery Row” and they have banded together to put out a brochure which shows where they are located along with a little information about each establishment. Saturday afternoons are the best times to visit and if you contact the distillers ahead of time you can see about a tour. One of the distillers I visited was Artisan Spirits who produce a pair of fine vodkas. Their Apia is distilled from mead - honey wine - with the honey coming from a local apiary which has the bees buzzing on raspberry blossoms. Martin Ryan is the other vodka and this is distilled from local syrah grapes. Using the same facility is Gnostalgic Spirits. Owner distiller Gwydion Stone - somewhat reminiscent of the singer Meat Loaf - who produces Marteau, one of the best absinthes to be found anywhere today. He has plans for developing absinthes in several styles in the near future so stay tuned.
