This traditional Austrian gastropub occupies a building dated to 1300 and once home to Mozart's sister Nannerl. Since opening in 1977, the same family has managed the restaurant, associated with a famous Austrian brewer. Simply decorated with wooden tables and chairs occupying two rooms, one predominantly for drinking and the second for dining. Our initial server was fast and efficient, but the bill was presented by a second who had the unmitigated gall to mention that the service charge was included but the tip was not.
According to sites devoted to beer, the very best varieties produced by the brewery are not available here. There is a long menu featuring Austrian traditional dishes ranging from boiled beef and roast pork to calf's lung, sausage, wiener schnitzel, and breaded chicken and fish. Salads feature beef, sausage, ham, and cheese and there are several soups as well. Entree prices range from 8Eu for spaghetti and meat sauce to 16Eu for steak, reasonable with large portions. Appetizers and salads are all less than 10Eu, soups less than 5. Desserts include apple strudel and "sachertorte" 4 Eu or less and all slathered in whipped cream.
Favorite Dish: Our best selection was roast pork with bread dumpling and cabbage salad, a portion large enough for an army. As elsewhere in Salzburg, our food was decent but far from superb.
