Like the nearby cities of Leipzig and Altenburg, Halle has its share of derelict buildings -- but also numerous examples of buildings that stood empty for many years before finally being renovated.

As I wrote in one of my Leipzig tips, there are several reasons for the existence of so many deserted buildings in Leipzig and other East German cities. One is the chronic lack of maintenance during the four decades of the German Democratic Republic. Another is that in some cases the ownership of buildings might still be disputed. Also there isn't enough money to fix everything at once, and not much pressure to do so because the population is declining.
