"Thuburbo Majus" Tunisia Things to Do Tip by Maria81

Tunisia Things to Do: 757 reviews and 1,154 photos

In the fields close to the town of El-Fahs, in Central Tunisia

Thuburbo Majus is one of Tunisia's most impressive Roman sights (although I think it's only partially excavated), although it has been a Berber settlement before the arrival of the Romans.

It was, however, after the visit of emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century that the city has grown both in size and in wealth, with over 10,000 people living there during its 'boom time'. Most of the buildings that have been unearthed thus far date back to the period (although there was another period of rapid construction about 150 years later)

Main Sights:

- The capitol and temple
- The Forum
- The olive press
- The temple of Mercury and the market
- Portico dei Petronii
- The House of Neptune
- Baths (Summer and Winter, plus a few smaller ones)
- The Sanctuaries (those of Caelestis and Baal)
