Ginnie Wade was the only civilian killed in the battle for Gettysburg. She was in the kitchen of her sister Georgia's house (548 Baltimore Street) when a stray bullet struck her and eventually took her life. The house where she died is more famous, but the house where she was born on 21 May 1843 and spent her childhood is at 242 Baltimore Street, just a few blocks north. In the early 1920's, John White Johnston, a New York businessman, bought the house and dedicated a memorial bronze plaque to her there in a ceremony that Georgia was able to attend. It is now the U.S. Christian Commission's Civil War Museum.
