Pestsäule (Plague Clumn) which is also known as Pest Column or Statue of Holy Trinity is located at Graben in the first district. It was erected under the order of Emperor Leopold I in honour of Holy Trinity due to the devastating outbreak of plague epidemics in 1679.
Initially a wooden Corinthian column with Trinity surrounded by angels was erected by Johann Frühwirth in 1683. A more permanent Baroque marble column was replaced in 1693 by Matthias Rauchmiller. The sulptures at its base were designed by the famous Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.
This is a wonderful piece of monument, one of the finest in Austria. It certainly is the most beautiful monument in the city of Vienna. It looks even more beautiful during the Christmas festive season with all the Christmas lightings and decorations above and surrounding the column as depicted in the rest of our hidden photographs. Feel free to look at them!
