With my love of beer and all things German, it is no wonder that Bierstadt Lake was a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, it's a favorite of many people including renowned German-American landscape painter Albert Bierstadt who captured it in numerous works. It is very accessible so again an early morning visit is best.
We stopped here very early the last morning of our two-night backcountry trip. It was where we had our last breakfast, a befitting finale to 27 nights spent in the backcountry of US National Parks in 2008. It's too pretty and accessible for the park to have a campground here or we might have chosen this as our last night too.
Directions: Bierstadt Lake can most easily be reached from its namesake trailhead just off Bear Lake Road on a 1.4 mile hike that climbs 550 feet. It is quite central and can be reached via other trails like the one from Bear Lake Trailhead.
