Cub Lake is another accessible, popular and pretty place for a picnic. Its popularity stems from very easy access, especially from Moraine Park Campground with a trail right from it to the lake.

The trail from Cub Lake Trailhead to its namesake lake climbs only 550 feet over its 2.3 mile length following a mostly flat and gentle terrain. It is a good short backcountry trip for beginners if you have ever thought of giving it a try. There is a pit toilet if you need one and are day-hiking. Look for campsite signs.

We did this as a side trip on our two-night backcountry trip. We did have to drop down a few feet but it was worth the small effort to enjoy its shore that was surprisingly empty that day.

Directions: Cub Lake Trailhead is on a paved spur road off Bear Lake Road in the eastern part of the park.
