Originally built in the late 4th century AD, the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo stands on the site of the house of the saints to whom it is dedicated. The two saints were beheaded in their own house in 362 AD. Meanwhile, the 13th century Romanesque campanile was built over a section of the Roman Temple of Claudius, which is visible to this day (see attached photos). The basilica was remodelled numerous times in its history, so much like many Roman churches, it is mix of styles from different eras, but the basic plan has probably not changed much. The 12th century portico contains mismatched columns, likely taken from pre-existing Roman structures, while the interior is an 18th century Baroque renovation which preserves a few mediaeval frescoes and objects. Excavations underneath the church have revealed Roman houses with pagan details, now open to visitors. The Basilica is located on Celio Hill, just south of the Colosseum.
