This place in a beautiful hidden canyon has become famous for its no-kill shelter. When it first opened 25 years ago it was the first anyone in Utah had ever heard of no-kill shelters.. It was a novel idea. We visited in those early years and it seemed to be struggling. Somewhere along the way it took off. Maybe it was rescuing animals left behind from Hurricane Katrina. Maybe it was being on DogTown. Maybe it was rehabilitating Michael Vicks fight dogs. But when we visited again this last year in hopes of adopting one of their dogs the change was impressive.
You can take a tour, or stay and volunteer for a week. They will let you walk the dogs, feed them, interact with those who have been approved for volunteers. You can take the dogs overnight for a get to know you session. You can adopt. There are also horses, cats, pigs, stray birds and more. It is one more reason Utah is a great place to visit.
Directions: Just north of Kanab off hwy 89
