The Pre-Columbian site of Monte Albán was the capital city of the Zapotec civilization of central Mexico, founded about 500 BC, and it was continuously occupied until at least 700 AD. At times it is said to have been home to about 25,000 people.
A guide is assigned to groups as they arrive, who will provide a lot of information as you tour the ruins. Additionally, there is a museum on site that is included in the entrance fee.
Covers a large area overlooking the city of Oaxaca (see third photo) and I suggest you go early in your stay; it is thrilling, and you may want to return!
Directions: Not far outside of the city; many tours available to go; mornings are best due to heat of the day. If you have your own car, directions can be easily obtained at your hotel.
