"Cave 32 (Jain)" Ellora Things to Do Tip by MM212
Ellora Things to Do: 71 reviews and 229 photos
The most splendid among the Jain caves at Ellora, Cave 32 is known as Indra Sabha, i.e. Indra's Assembly Hall. A monolithic shrine, resembling a miniature Kailasa Temple, and a life-size elephant statue are carved in the courtyard, which is surrounded by the two floors of the main temple. Both levels are decorated with numerous sculptures and contain several shrines dedicated to Mahavira, but the upper level is the most stunning. It has intriguing panels of Gomateshwara, the second son of Lord Rishabha, meditating naked in the jungle. Traces of the original paint used to colour the cave can still be seen and affords the visitor the ability to visualise the splendour the cave once displayed. Entering Cave 32 after the Hindu Caves one immediately notices the difference in style: Jain decorations contain significantly more elements from nature, including animals and plants.
