on the the famed admirals in the Pacific Theater in World War II. he was a hero in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944 which was the largest Modern Naval Warfare during Modern Times which was almost lost due to Admiral Willam Bull Halsey's Blunder of Pursuing the Remnants of the Japanese Imperial Carriers, which were just decoys. That Battle was the Admiral's Shining Moment.

according to wikipedia:

Sprague's greatest achievement came on October 25, 1944 when his Task Unit 77.4.3 (Taffy III) consisting of 6 escort carriers, 3 destroyers, and 4 destroyer escorts fought off the vastly superior Japanese Center Force at the Battle off Samar. The Japanese force consisted of 4 battleships, 6 heavy cruisers, 2 light cruisers, and 11 destroyers off the Samar Island in the Philippines. The Taffy CVE pilots bombed, strafed, and made dry runs while the Destroyers first laid smoke to cover the carriers, then made torpedo runs on the battleships and cruisers of Center Force then fought toe-to-toe gun duels with them. For the leadership he displayed in this incident, he received the Navy Cross.
