A series of fortifications built around the city in the 12th or 13th century, the defensive measures included forty individual towers. The city quickly outgrew this wall, and a second, larger, set were begun in 1356. The first wall was dismantled between the 16th and 18th centuries, but isolated sections can still be seen today.

I particularly liked the Black Tower, next to St Catherine's church (Place Ste Catherine), and the Aneessens Tower (at the top of Rue Haute / Rue de Rollebeek
