The Entries, Belfast: 5 reviews and 21 photos
Wilsons Court was my next 'Entries Find' This starts as a passageway off High Street, then lands in a small courtyard next to a pub. This is The Mermaid Inn (pic 3) it continues again as a narrow passageway, which ends on Anne Street.
The Mermaid Inn (No 5-7 Wilsons Court Belfast, BT1 4DQ) was known in 1860 as 'The Rainbow Hotel and Tavern' and is believed to be one of Belfasts earliest surviving domestic buildings.
Wilsons Court is also the place where the first edition of the ' Northern Star' newspaper was published. This was produced by the 'United Irishmen' and although it only ran for a short time, it had a turbulent history! Production of this newspaper ended on the 19th May 1797, following an attack on the office, which destroyed the premises.
The Mermaid Inn - I didn't venture in here, (it was late morning, and I was still full from my breakfast coffee and cake) though on one of my next visits to Belfast, I'd probably wander in for a half of the black stuff!
