Of course, you go to the mountain to walk on the mountain. Officially, the Mt. Fuji climbing season is from July through August -- that's when you can go to the top, stop at the huts along the way, get your walking staff stamped and everything else. Our first visit to Mt. Fuji occurred in mid-October, long after all of that was done for the year. However, the weather was startlingly beautiful, the air was fresh and there were plenty of people enjoying what remained of the climbing path below the snow line. It's actually possible to get in an invigorating walk on the mountain even this late in the year. We walked up quite a bit, though others walked further.
....The soil is rough lava and although the trail is semi-paved with stair like structures, you should still wear appropriate footwear.
