Our whole reason for going to Salzburg was to take a day trip to Eagle's Nest. After a long, frustrating day of missing buses and trying to figure out how the heck to get there, we finally made it. However, we arrived at the ticket center at 4:15pm and we missed the last bus to Eagle's Nest.
SO, while I was there I said I would come back and write about how to get to Eagle's Nest from Salzburg.

1.) Start at the main Salzburg bus/train station, find the McDonalds which is right next door and then walk across the street. There will be a bus stop with a sign for which buses stop there. There is also a sign with the black eagle on it.
Take bus #840 to it's final destination, Berchtesgaden. This will take about 45 minutes and cost about 4.5 Euros.
2.) Get off the bus and cross over to the other island and get on bus #838. This will take you to the ticket center , I believe the stop is Obersalzburg but the bus ticket actually reads "Dokumentation." This ride will cost about 3 Euros.
3.) Once you get to Dokumentation, you'll see a restaurant to the left and some flags to your right at the side of the parking area. Walk towards the flags. The ticket center is down the stairs at the bottom of the flags.
Inside the restaurant building there is also a gift shop.
At the ticket center the bathrooms are free.
4.) after you buy your tickets to enter Eagle's Nest for 15 Euros you'll get on the bus that is indicated on your ticket. (for the best views going up the mountain, get on the bus and sit down to the left.)
5.) When you arrive at the top you have to stop at the window and pick your departure time. This insures that you have a spot on the bus going down. We spent an hour but did not eat at the top. I wish we would have spent two hours.
6.) walk towards the tunnel and inside the tunnel is the elevator that brings you to the top.

* walk all the way to the top. It's rocky and the ground can be tough to maneuver but take your time, it's worth it.

***MOST IMPORTANT***

The first bus to Eagle's Nest from the ticket center is at 9AM, Last bus to Eagle's Nest is at 4PM.
