Like Copenhagen and other conscientious cycling cities, Berlin has started installing special traffic lights for cyclists at particularly busy or dangerous intersections.

The main purpose of these special signals is to prevent cyclists from being hit by right-turning motor vehicles.

As I wrote in one of my Copenhagen tips, this is no doubt more expensive that just letting cyclists be squashed to death, but the expense is totally justified and in any case is just a small fraction of the huge amounts routinely spent on infrastructure for motor vehicles.
