In recent years Berlin has built up an extensive network of bicycle routes. The Senate, Berlin's equivalent of a City Council, has allocated funds and is planning to expand this network in the near future.

Starting at Schlossplatz in the city center, twelve bicycle routes fan out into the suburbs in a star-shaped network ("radial") linked by eight circular routes.

There is also a Berlin Wall Trail which follows the course of the former GDR border fortifications encircling West Berlin, the former western half of the city, for a distance of about 160 kilometers.

Also there are currently three long-distance routes which pass through Berlin: the European Bicycle Route R1, the Bicycle Path Berlin-Usedom and the 630-kilometer Berlin-Copenhagen Route which includes a short sea voyage across the Baltic from Rostock to Gedser -- a somewhat longer ferry crossing that the one I described on my Rødbyhavn page.
