Photos: Cyclists on the red stripes in Berlin
Like a lot of other cities in this part of the world, Berlin has started painting conspicuous red stripes on the streets at intersections where cyclists might be in danger of being hit by right-turning cars.
These red stripes are the equivalent of the blue stripes in Copenhagen and the white symbols and arrows in Paris.
Studies in Copenhagen have shown that these stripes are most effective if used sparingly. One colored stripe per intersection really does reduce the number of accidents, but two or more stripes are counter-productive because they confuse car drivers.
