That morning after sleeping in Sta Teresa di Riva we were curious of Taormina true atmosphere and form which we were only reading about it before and saw it on pics and it was 'our' first really famous Sicilian city to see ever. It has been established by Greeks who left their theater upon the city, and has been re-developed and re-designed by other powers succeding one after another which can be read from its architecture. Due its location relatively close to Etna vulcano, good climate and evergreen vegetation, charming streets with old architecture and on the steep slope overlooking the sea with Isola Bella right below Taormina has been always attracted and appreciated by many people including film stars and writers. Well, they probably had their time good spent there in the sun and with good treatment.
It seems like one of those places which will always get crowds of people into its streets, no matter how expensive and filled with souvenirs it becomes. However, just walk your way and feel its spirit. Or sit down in shaded garden and have your glass of local wine and observe. There's lot to see - although you'll see it in other Sicilian towns and cities too: like these details of facades with balconies - details above doors and windows; narrow passages from one to other street, paved with stone. Splendid gardens with views and pocket gardens and terraces, ancient ruins and restored buildings, squares and city doors. Corso feels like bustling main street where you slower your pace not only to watch architecture and details but somewhat because you watch your steps in thick masse of people - and because your eyes get catch by fancy windows of the shops and glittery distractors.
Well, trully nicest and unique is the view of Isola Bella, small green oasis by the sea as can be viewed from terrace at the edge of town. It was hot that day and would make me walk under trees there and swim but we already had been thirsty for more quiet place with fewer people in the place. Etna was in clouds so even I tried hard there wasn't much to see it from Taormina that day. Public garden was very pleasant indeed. But views and all that included - doesn't really make me come back in the end.
Note: if you come by car you have to park it in parking house before city. Public bus will take you for free and it's really short distance so you may want to walk back and avoid being sardined in the bus. Parking hour is most expensive we ever paid and for this reason we couldn't really spend whole day sightseeing here. No problem - our two and half hours were really enough to get the feel.
Directions: Taormina, by the coast follow local road. If on Highway Messina-Catania exit by the sign for Taormina.
