"Halkidiki" Greece Things to Do Tip by nickandchris
Greece Things to Do: 909 reviews and 1,592 photos
Halkidiki is in the north of mainland Greece, between Thessaloniki in the west and Stavros in the east. It consists of three prongs, Kassandra,Sithonia and Athos, reaching into the Agean Sea at the south and washed on the west by the Thermaic Gulf and on the east by the Strymonic Gulf.
Kassandra is surrounded by beautiful beaches, some very much developed for tourism especially on the east. Inland are traditional villages, rolling farmland, even cattle and pine forests.
Sithonia is more mountainous and forested, again with an abundance of beautiful beaches but more off the beaten track. This area has plenty of camping opportunities with many sites being situated on beaches.
Athos is the third and most easterly prong, some 50 kms. long and known as "The Holy Mountain".It is populated entirely by monks in the remaining monasteries, some twenty or so and only allows male visitors. Even female animals are banned!!!
Various boat excursions skirt the peninsula but must keep their distance. All very mysterious!!!!
It's 14 years since we were in Halkidiki and I wonder how it has changed? There were so many places that were just waiting to be developed; has it happened? I did feel areas of Kassandra were already totally ruined as far as our type of holiday goes but we aren't the norm. A lot of people like to be surrounded by bright lights and loud music.
Would it be worth re-visiting, is the question?
One thing is for certain, if you're not into beaches, Halkidiki may not be your cup of tea...........
