The small and efficient Bangor airport (BGR) is an excellent choice as an air gateway to northern Maine and the Canadian maritimes. The airport is served by something like four major carriers, albeit via smaller jets and a few prop planes. We flew Delta into Bangor from JFK (coming in). (Going home, we left BGR heading to Boston-Logan.) I think that USAir, United and American may also be carriers serving BGR. Being as the airport does have flights into Canada, it's an international airport.

The hotel attached to the airport (Four Points Sheraton) is a good choice if you need a comfortable and convenient place to stay. Rental cars are within easy reach of the arrival lounge and the car park (for both rentals and private cars) are nearby and expansive... plenty of room.
