I visited Trafalgar Square in the day and also at night, and liked at both times.

During the day, the square, overwhelmed by the statue of Nelson, is throbbing with activity and people running around, taking pictures and heading for the National Gallery.

At night, is the opposite. The square is very calm and peaceful, and the lights coming from the National Gallery give it a great atmosphere.

It's a good starting point to go up into the Soho, Chinatown and Covent Garden.
