The Ministry of Foreign Affairs are situated in the old Palacio de Cruz Palace. The palace was designed by Juan Gomez de Mora with help by other notable Spanish architects and built between 1629 and 1936 under the orders of King Felipe IV. There are two courtyard within the complex and two spire towers. Originally the Palace was used as a royal prison and for many of the inmates, their fate was an execution at the Plaza Mayor. After a fire in 1791, practically all but the façade was destroyed and had to be rebuilt.
