Another square that deserves some of your attention is the Piazza Garibaldi. It lies in the exact centre of the city, and in fact the bridge opposite the square is called the Ponte di Mezzo, the "Middle Bridge". At the centre of the square is of course a statue of Garibaldi himself. The square is one of the gathering points in Pisa. People meet beneath the statue or in one of several bars that edge the square (we had a pleasant pre-dinner drink in the arcaded bar on the north side), or queue for ices at the popular La Bottega del Gelato, said to be the best ice-cream shop in the city. We didn?t get round to testing this but VT member sue_stone has a pretty convincing review on her Pisa page.

On the north side of the square one of the city?s most chic and cosmopolitan streets begins, the Borgo Stretto. Look up as you walk through the arch that marks its start, at this beautiful wooden sculpture of the Holy Virgin.

Address: Garibaldi Square
Directions: At the northern end of the Ponte di Mezzo
