The Belfry is a wooden tower which sees to absorb and deflect into the more solid lower parts of the cathedral, the vibrations of the bells, which might otherwise crack the sculpted stone of the towers,. The south tower was only fitted with a belfry in 1423. In 1845, violet-le-Duc rebuilt the belfry out of oak, during the restoration work on the building. It weighs 170 tones and its total height is 24.20 m
