There are currently two trains an hour from Leipzig to Altenburg.

One is a regional express (RE) that takes forty minutes, stopping at four stations along the way. The other is a regional train (RB) that takes fifty-two minutes, stopping at all sixteen stations along the route.

The main station in Altenburg is an imposing edifice that was built in 1876 during a period of prosperity and increasing rail traffic.
