Porte Narbonnaise - Narbonne Gate, Carcassonne: 11 reviews and 22 photos
Through the 13C, and later, the most vulnerable part of a fortress was the entry. When (St.) Louis IX and Philippe III improved the defenses the second ring of ramparts was added, the double tower and the double barbican. It was the latest thing in that it was angled to prevent two abreast horse or battering charges. In addition , in the bend was a ?murder-hole (meurtrier) to trap attackers (so designed that sealing doors could be dropped at the ends and boiling oil could be poured down on the invaders). The towers are 25m high and 4 m thick at the bases to preclude sapping. On the face of the towers are projections (becs) to divert catapult launched stone missiles (soon to be cannonballs). As a further protection, a statue of the Virgin is set in a niche above the portal between the towers (she too has been ?improved? since we visited}. The tourist office has a branch in one of the towers.
