Iglesia del Santa Maria de la Alhambra was built on the site of an old Mosque. There is part of a marble pillar standing in front of the church which has a plaque which describes a couple of monks who were beheaded by Sultan Mohammed V for preaching their faith to the heretics. Construction of the church began in 1581 and took some 37 years to complete. There are six chapels and a belltower.
