Back on the Gran Via, and we're heading towards Abando, but there are still some interesting things to see. This stretch of Gran Via is pedestrianised in parts, with benches set out under shady trees.
The first important building that we come to is the Bizkaia Regional Government Building, Also known as Edificio de la Diputación Foral de Vizcaya or simply, The Deputation. It's the seat of the executive branch of the Government of Biscay.
It was built between 1890 and 1900 by architect Luis Aladren, in a mainly Renaissance style.
Originally, the Headquarters were in Plaza Nueva, but they moved here on completion of the building. It's worthwhile taking a look at the outside stonework of the facade.
Apparently, it's possible to see the inside (by prior arrangement). There are some frescoes decorating the walls, painted by Anselmo Guinea as well as some stained glass windows and works of art. Pic 5 shows one of the stained glass windows from the outside.
Walking around the outside of the building, there is a stone plaque (pics 3+4) but I'm not sure what this commemorates.
Behind the Deputation building is a pleasant square and the library.......
