Favorite thing: Utrecht has a large conference center, de Jaarbeurs, situated next to the Central station so the city often hosts large conventions so on your visit you may be suprised with an extra-ordinary display or festival.
On my first visit we were treated to an argentine tango display next to the cafe we were sitting outside of. On my second visit Utrecht was full of goths dressed up in their exquisite vintage clothes for the Summer of Darkness weekend festival. Also there was a large Jehovah's Witness conference but as we were out we never came across any door knockers.
