EYUP........The name comes from Abu Ayyub al-Ansar................. the companion and standard bearer of the Prophet Mohammed who is said to have fallen in battle during the attack on the walls of Constantinople by Arab armies in the 700's,................. died and as his last request was to be buried here.

After the city was taken, Sultan Mehmet ordered a tomb and Mosque to be built. In 1453, during Sultan Mehmet II's siege of Constantinople, the grave was said to have been miraculously rediscovered.

The grave is a sacred site in both religion and Turkish political history, as Abu Ayyub was not only a friend of the Prophet, but the key to the greatest Ottoman victory.
Ottoman officials wished to be buried at or near the site of Abu Ayyub's resting place, with the cemetery becoming one of Istanbul's most desirable final resting places.
It stretches way up the hills to Pierre Loti cafe area and lookout.

An interesting area to visit. It was quite busy when I was there on a Wednesday, evidently
On Fridays, holy days for Islam, throngs of the faithful visit the mausoleum.

WHERE .......At the Eyup Mosque complex
