Algonquin has five different camping sites (as well as other picnic-only sites) scattered along Highway 60. We knew that we were only going to be able to look because of time constraints, but pulled in anyway to see the 'lay of the land' at Canisbay Lake. According to park literature: "This campground is located at the south end of Canisbay Lake, one km north, on a paved road, from Highway 60, 23 km from the West Gate and 33 km from the East Gate. Canisbay Lake Campground features 242 sites, 66 of which have electrical hook ups. 101 sites are located in a designated radio-free and dog-free zone. Sixteen paddle-in sites are also available. There are large comfort stations with flush toilets and laundry facilities, and a handicapped accessible shower and toilet. The Canisbay Lake site has two sand beaches, one in the day use area and one in the campground."
However, the real joy of Algonquin is in the hundreds of lakes, hiking trails and canoe routes in its much larger northern areas. A few kilometers further on we spotted Ontario government-owned deHavilland Beaver floatplane C-F0EH moored at its base on Smoke Lake (4th photo). Built in 1966 and later upgraded with a more powerful engine, this plane is used to patrol for forest fires and also deliver park scientists and visitors to remote parts of Algonquin with their canoes strapped to its pontoon struts if required!
Directions: Canisby Lake is at Km 23 from the West Gate and Smoke Lake is at Km 15
