Pontevedra is the capital of the province with the same name. It gives also its name to the ria at whose end the city is located.
I read somewhere that Pontevedra is the “"definitive old Galician town". I completely agree. Walking along the old city is a pleasure. It is a pedestrian zone where you can follow an itinerary proposed in the brochures you will get at the tourist office. Along this route you will see the Pilgrim Chapel in the Praza da Peregrina, San Francisco church and monastery (the last houses now an office of the Treasury); the museum of Pontevedra, with an interesting collection of objects from the prehistory; the Nazareno Chapel; the house where the writer Ramón María del Valle Inclán lived, with a cruceiro in its front, San Bartolomé church, and the Basílica de Santa María, a jewel of the Renaissance in Galicia with a great façade in the shape of an altarpiece.
