Arizona Off The Beaten Path: 102 reviews and 134 photos

Hard to imagine that this dry desert country was once a swamp. At one time that is what it was and that is how the Petrified Forest National Park came to exist along I-40 between Chambers and Holbrook. Once it is polished up petrified wood is really quite beautiful. Laying on the ground as fragmented trunks it is not quite so impressive. I went here when I was a boy for the first time. I had some kind of idea in my head the tree trunks would be upright. They are lying on the ground in chunks and many have been dragged up closer to the road for viewing from your car. It is not quite as impressive as I thought it might be. Petrified Forest is a place that I am glad I saw but I won't take time to go back to.
