an interesing side trip from columbus is providence canyon state park. providence canyon is nicknamed georgia's "little grand canyon". providence canyon was formed by erosion by poor farming practices in the 1800's. providence canyon state park offers camping, hiking, and backpacking. see the attached web site for more information.
providence canyon is a 45 minute drive south of columbus. from downtown columbus take US 280 east to US 27 south to lumpkin georgia. providence canyon is seven miles west of lumpkin on GA 39C.
