"The Town Square" Heraklion Things to Do Tip by etfromnc

One of my favorite pastimes for after work was to just drive to the town center and enjoy a Gazoza, the late afternoon sun, the beautiful fountain with the stately lions in the center of the traffic circle, and the wonderful array of Greeks and tourists who passed by in successive waves which I found to be both informative and entertaining. The first wave usually consisted of teens making their way home from school, girls walking arm in arm and deeply engaged in conversation as if totally unaware that there were other humans anywhere near the plaza, yet eagerly hoping that certain special young men were there to notice them and guys also walking but much more actively, often with a soccer ball, or playing hacky-sack, or just general GA. The next wave usually consisted of a strong majority of men on their way home from work with their seemingly uniform black suits, white shirts, and black shoes and ties. As the sun began to sink in the direction of Rethymnon, the square (actually more circular) became much more colorful and an air of romance filled the air.
Directions: At the top of the switchback hill on the main highway coming in from the east and adjacent to the Archaeological Museum.
