San Francisco Off The Beaten Path: 637 reviews and 1,075 photos
Well known, but further afield from most of San Francisco's tourist sights, is Balmey St, literally a small alley where you can find close to a dozen large graffiti-type murals painted on backyard fences and garage doors. Most of them are quite sophisticated and well painted. Some are just pretty paintings, many have overt political themes.
It is relatively easy to get there by public transportation. From the intersection of Mission and 24th Streets, it's an easy 5-6 block walk to the East. It is also right in the center of the large Latin American barrio- a great opportunity to stop in to any one of the many restaurants and cafes for authentic ethnic food. Several South and Central American countries are represented.
