During the first days of the war, French troops launched a large-scale raid that briefly captured the city of Mulhouse in the far south of Alsace, but were shortly, thereafter, chased out and the war in this region would take on a much deadlier face. Desperate fighting would occur along the crests of the Elite French alpine chasseurs would be thrown away for little purpose until the French government finally stepped in late 1915 to stop the wastage of life. Today?s visitor will have the advantage of walking in some of the most interesting French mountainscapes outside of the Pyrenees or Alps. Remember that most of the fighting took place in the winter to add to the misery.
