Pastelaria-Padaria São Roque: "Art Nouveau décor and great coffee (and pastries)" Lisbon Restaurant Tip by toonsarah

Situated on a corner on the northern fringes of the Bairro Alto (or at least of that part of it visited by tourists), this café has everything you might look for in such an establishment. The interior is a mix of the unpretentious (basic but functional wooden tables and chairs) and the glorious – Art Nouveau tiling graces the curved counter where you place your order, and ornate pillars hold up the equally ornate ceiling. Outside a few tables are squeezed on to the narrow pavement, perfect for people-watching.

Favorite Dish: As for the all-important coffee, it is good and strong. But the real attractions here are the pastries, which are light and delicious. I loved its pastéis de nata, and Ingrid raved about the dainty meringues. Croissants and other delicacies also looked tempting – next time I must drag myself away from those pasteis to sample something else!
