From the top of the Leas to the beach is quite a long drop and a very steep walk back up. To accommodate this there is a funicular railway/lift that connects the two. It dates back to 1885 and is looking a bit sad these days. From the notice outside it looks as if it only operates regularly between Easter and October. Outside of this period it only runs on Sundays. These hours may have been reduced even further as I believe the local council is giving up the lease on the lift, much against the wishes of residents who are arranging a petition. It would be a shame to lose it but I guess there's not so much call for it now that the Rotunda area that used to house an amusement park has been flattened for redevelopment.
