Panaji - Panjim City, Goa: 19 reviews and 37 photos
Alfonso de Albuquerque was a Portuguese nobleman, holding military and administrative position under King Manuel I of Portugal. He established the Portuguese colonial empire in Goa. He was the first portuguese outside the royal family to be made a Duke (of Goa) by king Manuel I. He died in 1515 AD on the sea, after being wrongly charged to infidelity to the King and was buried in Goa. Later the king realised that he was not infidel and his son was given due honours rightly deserved by his father.
Alfonso mangoes derive their name from him. He used to bring these mangoes on his journeys to India.
There is a statue of Alfonso de Albuquerque in a park in Panaji.
