The castle was founded in the 9th century by Prince Borivoj. It position high above the River Vltava made it a centre of the lands ruled by the Premyslids. Within the castle, walls were a palace, three churches and a monastery. Hradcany was founded in part of the castles outer bailey in 1320. The castle has been rebuilt many times especially in the reigns of Charles IV and Vladislav Jagiello. The buildings were rebuilt in a renaissance style after the fire of 1541 damaged them.
The castle has been the seat of the president of the republic since 1918.
The changing of the guard takes place every hour with a fanfare at noon.
